Matthew’s Pizzeria

I think it’s hard to have good pizza.  Not only does everyone have a subjective taste on one of America’s most ordered and prepared foods, but different cities and restaurants go out of their way to make their own unique versions of pizza.  There are so many components to pizza: what kind of bread; what type, if any, sauce will be used; greens or no greens; which toppings need to be cooked before placed on the pizza; what type and how much cheese; thinner or thicker crust; light or heavy on the sauce, again, if any; how should this pizza be baked; and so forth.  Wow, it’s exhausting just thinking how many ways there are to make pizza.  When I’m in the mood and at home, I’ll make some sauce and then use some fresh mozzarella and make pizza with either naan or ready-made dough.  My favorite home pizza is shrimp, baby belle mushrooms, and bell peppers with a siracha or gochuchang drizzle with arugula on top.  I bet your weren’t expecting that combo!

Baltimore is no different, there’s so many places to get pizza! But because we’re in Maryland, we got to put Old Bay and crab on pizza! One place that does a great job of that is Matthew’s Pizzeria. Now for the sauce lovers, be forewarned, this is one of those places that you will end up with a sauceless pizza if you don’t read the menu carefully!

The style of pizza they do here is like a mix with Detroit style, but in circles instead of rectangles. So you have very crisp crust edges, thicker bread, and an easy way to burn the roof of your mouth because you can’t wait to take a bite! The crab pizza will forever bring me back here. They keep it affordable by using back fin instead of lump crab meat, add a mix of different cheeses, and top it with caramelized onions. It’s a delicious combination and smells so good coming fresh out the oven. Then finish off with some parmesan, red pepper flakes, oregano, and welcome to pure enjoyment. I give this pizza a 4.75 suya sticks! All I need is more cheese or to one day try it with lump crab as a special on Maryland day! And you’re probably noticing a theme, this guy really loves seafood on pizza haha. They also do an amazing BBQ Chicken pizza which, is the only other pizza I order here. (Really good meatball sub too!)
